TCI Train-the-Trainer ProgramsTCI TxT ProgramsTherapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Training Services OfferedThe RCCP offers three TCI training programs that have been tailored for specificsettings, including foster care families and school personnel. Information about TCI,TCI for Schools (TCIS), and TCI for Families (TCIF) can be found at: http://rccp.cornell.edu/TCI LevelOne.html.These training programs are offered on a fee-for-service basis throughout the UnitedStates, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia.The RCCP offers three ways for organizations to access TCI/TCIS/TCIF Train-the-Trainer and Update program: Regularly Scheduled Open Enrollment Training. TCI TxT ProgramsTherapeutic Crisis Intervention Train-the-Trainer ProgramThis intensive five-day TCI train-the-trainer certificationcourse provides organizations with the opportunityto develop an in-house training capacity in the TCIcurriculum. Participants will develop knowledge, skills,and attitudes in the TCI curriculum necessary to deliverthe training to staff in their organizations. Participantswill have the chance to participate, practice, and receivefeedback in conducting activities to gain immediatetraining experience. Training techniques such as roleplaying, leading small group discussions, using guidedfantasies, conducting practice sessions, and usingaudiovisual aids will be demonstrated. Participants willreceive all the necessary materials to conduct the TCItraining program in their agency.Program ObjectivesParticipants will be able to: Proactively prevent and/or de-escalate a potentialcrisis situation with a child. Manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner,and, if necessary, intervene physically in a manner thatreduces the risk of harm to children and staff. Process the crisis event with children to help improvetheir capacity to regulate their emotions and usepositive coping strategies. Effectively deliver TCI training in their agencies.Intended AudienceThis course is for trainers, managers, counselors, andcare workers capable of training therapeutic crisisintervention techniques. If participating in the physicalintervention part of the program, participants must becapable of moderate physical activity.Day 2: De-escalating a Crisis. Verbal and nonverbaltechniques for crisis prevention and de-escalation arepresented. How to provide behavior support, use crisiscommunication, avoid power struggles, help childrenand young people regulate their emotions throughco-regulation strategies, and select appropriate methodsto de-escalate a potentially violent child are practiced.Day 3: Managing a Crisis, Safety Interventions, andRecovery. Life Space Interviewing (LSI) techniques aretaught and methods to deescalate a potentially violentchild are practiced. The rationale for safety interventionsis explained and situations when restraint should andshould not be used are discussed. The use of variousphysical intervention techniques and safety concerns arediscussed and practiced.Day 4: Safety Interventions and Recovery.Participants practice Life Space Interviewing.Professional, ethical and organizational considerationsare discussed. Participants have opportunities to practicethe use of various physical intervention techniques.Day 5: Implementing the TCI System. Life SpaceInterviewing is practiced and documentation issues arepresented. All participants are tested for certification.MaterialsParticipants who successfully complete the coursereceive a TCI trainer’s reference and activity guide, aflash drive (containing videos and the TCI PowerPointpresentation), and a student workbook.Program OutlineDay 1: Crisis Prevention: Creating a Safe Place forLearning and Crisis as Opportunity. The six domains ofthe TCI trauma-informed system are examined. Howto use trauma-informed practice to create a therapeuticmilieu that prevents crises and promotes growth andlearning is discussed. TCI TxT ProgramsTherapeutic Crisis Intervention for Families (TCIF) Train-the-Trainer ProgramThis intensive five-day TCIF train-the-trainercertification course provides agency trainers with thetools to teach crisis prevention strategies and crisisintervention techniques to adults who care for childrenin their homes. Trainers are prepared to coach learnersduring skill practice sessions, to use role playing, tofacilitate small group discussions, and to handle resistanceto training. There are opportunities to practice activitiesand to gain immediate training experience in thesubject matter. TCIF stresses crisis prevention and crisisde-escalation in ways that help children learn to avoidlosing control. TCI TxT ProgramsTherapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools Train-the-Trainer ProgramThis intensive five-day TCIS train-the-trainercompetency-based certification course provides schooldistricts the opportunity to develop an in-house trainingcapacity in the TCIS curriculum. Participants are taught how to assess asituation, identify setting conditions in a classroom, theimportance of good classroom instruction, the effects oftrauma, and the importance of emotional competencein preventing crisis, and how to maintain self-controlin preventing or handling a crisis through awareness ofpersonal feelings and values.8Day 2:Triggering and Escalation. The importance ofknowing the student and awareness of the environmentin a crisis situation are discussed. Verbal and nonverbaltechniques for crisis prevention and de-escalation,behaviors support techniques, emotional first aid, how toavoid power struggles, and use of protective interventionsare presented and practiced.Day 3: Escalation, Outburst and Recovery.Managing aggressive behavior, elements of a potentiallyviolent situation are discussed. Strategies for co-regulatingwith a student when at the height of crisis outburstwill be taught and practiced as well as the Life SpaceInterviewing following a crisis event. The rationale forsafety interventions is explained and situations whenrestraint should and should not be used are discussed.The use of various physical intervention techniques andsafety concerns are discussed, presented, and practiced.Day 4: Outburst, Recovery and Implementingthe TCIS System. Participants practice of Life SpaceInterviewing skills, crisis co-regulation skills, and thevarious physical intervention skills. Individual CrisisSupport Plans (ICSPs) are presented and practiced.Safety concerns and documentation issues are discussed.The elements of the TCIS system are reviewed and theimplementation of the TCIS system in school districtsand/or schools is discussed and recommended actionplans are developed for the individual school districtsand/or schools.Day 5: Certification Evaluation and Testing:Crisis Co-regulation and Life Space Interviewing arepracticed. Two-Day TCI UpdatesDesigning Refresher TrainingThis update is a two-day program for current TCIcertified trainers. The update provides materialsdesigned to assist certified TCI trainers in designingand implementing effective and agency specific TCIrefresher training in order to enhance individual andorganization performance. Topics include: the differencebetween primary training and refresher training; factorsthat facilitate skill transfer and maintenance; an effectiveformat for presenting TCI materials using the model ofdiscussion, demonstration, and practice; and assessing,designing, delivering, and evaluating refresher training.Participants will be asked to present activities appropriatefor refresher training during this update. In advance of theupdate, participants will be asked to bring their activityguides and sample critical incidents (with all personallyidentifying information deleted) for review and useduring the practice activities. Two-Day TCI UpdatesDeveloping Professional Level Training SkillsThis is a two-day program for any associate levelTCI trainer. Successful completion of this update isa requirement for those interested in applying forprofessional level certification. This update focuses ondeveloping professional level trainer skills, understandingthe stages of skill development, learning how skills arelearned and maintained, and facilitating the transfer oflearning from the classroom to the workplace. Majortopics include: setting the stage for training, presentationskills, group process and communication skills,knowledge of subject matter, demonstrations of skills,coaching and corrective feedback, and managing thetraining. Participants present a range of activities in orderto receive feedback and enhance their skills in theseareas. This update will look at every aspect of planning,delivering, and evaluating TCI training from the trainer’sperspective.Program OutlineDay 1 presents the criteria for effective training programs,characteristics of adult learners, and the qualities ofeffective trainers. The learning process and learninghierarchies are discussed and applied to TCI training.Participants have the opportunity to present activities insmall groups focusing on verbal information outcomes.Individual corrective feedback on presentation skills is apart of all activities for this update. Two-Day TCI UpdatesPost-Crisis ResponseThis update is a two-day program for current TCI certifiedtrainers.The TCI Post-Crisis Response.(TCI-PCR) update provides materials to assist TCIcertified trainers in designing and implementing theTCI Post-Crisis Multilevel Response Model (PCR).Topics include, how to address the emotional needsstaff may have when managing aggressive clients; howthe supervisor, after crisis incidents reflecting, cansupport front line staff; and utilizing the Post-CrisisMultilevel Response Model (immediate debriefing, LSI,documentation, incident review with staff, and teamreview).Program ObjectivesParticipants will be able to: Analyze the effect of a crisis on staff members and theorganization Demonstrate immediate debriefing strategies Use the LSI process more effectively with the youthafter crisis Use documentation to assist in the post-crisis response Demonstrate the incident review process with the staffmember(s) Demonstrate the incident review process with theteam Demonstrate the incident review process with theteam, using the incident report and the individualcrisis support plan (ICSP) Develop an implementation plan for the post-crisismultilevel response systemProgram OutlineDay 1 provides an overview of the TCI System andfocuses on the importance of the supervisor and thepost-crisis multilevel response. Participantsalso practice all of the physical intervention techniques.Day 2 continues with a demonstration and practicesession on conducting incident reviews with staffmembers, using critical incident reports and ICSP’s,and facilitating a team/unit review. Participants havethe opportunity to develop an implementation plan forinstituting the post-crisis multilevel response system intheir own organizations.
