123doku

An offline logic game

A tunnel, a plane, a village with no bars: exactly where you have time to think, and exactly where most games stop. 123doku keeps going. Its ladder, its daily grid and its hints ask nothing of the network. Two things still do, and this page names them rather than glossing over them.

The grids are already on the phone

They are not fetched while you play: they travel with the app. Opening a grid, placing a stone, erasing, starting over, finishing, all of it happens on the device. The game does not ask anyone whether your solution is right, because it can check that itself.

The daily grid too, which is less obvious

A «daily grid» usually implies a server handing it out. Not here: the daily grid follows from the date, the same for everyone, and your phone works it out on its own. So you can play it on a plane, and it really will be that day's grid.

The hints work with no network

The hint that explains which rule applies, the check on a grid in progress, pointing out a mistake, revealing a stone: all four are computed on the device. That is the difference between help and a downloaded clue, and it shows precisely on the day there is no signal.

What waits for you when the network returns

What you played offline is not lost: the game keeps it and sends it at the next opportunity. Your points, your solved grids and your streak go up on their own as soon as the connection is back, without you having to think about it.
